What You Should Remember When Teaching English As A Foreign Language

TEFL or Teaching English as a Foreign Language can be quite a rewarding profession. You get exposed to various travel opportunities. You’d be able to explore around, learn more about their culture and their way of life, make new friends and create beautiful memories that you can tell your grandkids in the coming future.

In order to become a TEFL teacher, you must enrol in a TEFL course provided a reputable TEFL training school like Pro TEFL so that you can become certified. Once you become certified, then you can start hunting for jobs or ask for job assistance from your TEFL course providers. But once you’ve found a TEFL job teaching in a foreign country, there are some things that you need to remember.

  1. Your students need to practice English, not you. Most of the time, TEFL teachers get carried away with all the attention that is focused on them and because of this, they either fail to give time for their students to practice their English or forget about it at all. You may be a funny and interesting teacher but you didn’t come there to entertain.
  2. Use your learners as a resource. Teachers often dedicate time finding resources for their lessons but with TEFL the best resource are the learners themselves. Try to keep conversations with your students and have them tell you more about themselves in English of course.
  3. Teaching doesn’t mean learning. You may be the best at explaining and giving lessons but unless your students are receptive of your teachings, they won’t learn.
  4. Speaking is different from writing. Some of your students will be better at speaking while others are better at writing. Every student has their own strengths and weaknesses and that is what you as a teacher would have to build up.
  5. Your students will be more interested in the things they find interesting. It is your job to find out what your class is interested in and incorporate it in some way into your class to keep them engaged.
  6. Learning is communicating and vice versa. Without effective communication, your students would have a hard time learning. So let it be a two-way process where both you and the class are givers and receivers.
