The re-launch of the phenomenal My Little Pony has spurred the introduction of Hasbro’s girl’s toys. Aside from toys, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has influenced a lot of other products from accessories to apparel. My little pony hoodies can be used by fans when they attend brony meetings.
The word brony has become a peculiar internet phenomenon but is has also received a share of derision. It seems that people cling to the belief that cartoons are only for kids and adults do not have the right to be entertained.
On the other hand, Hasbro most recent earning reports show a big growth in what was perceived as girl’s toys. Hasbro’s girl’s toys are selling like hotcakes while Mattel’s Barbie doll sales have dropped by 14% in the last quarter. However, the puzzling question is whether all the buyers are girls?
The intriguing question came about because of the growing number of “Bronies” that were spurred by My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. My Little Pony has been around since the late 80’s but 27 years later, Hasbro has decided to introduce a new look for toys based on the popular animated series.
To quote directly from Hasbro’s most recent earning’s release; the girl’s category grew by at least 21% in the first quarter of 2014. My Little Pony, My Little Pony Equestria Girls and Nerf Rebelle (which is essentially a pink Nerf gun) have contributed to the outstanding growth of the category.
While Hasbro does not want to be bogged down with the financials of the whole thing, traditional pillars of the toy industry like Hasbro’s Playskool and many of its board games, Mattel’s Barbie and Fisher Price are flagging. My Little Pony is doing quite well and Hasbro’s girl’s category has propelled Hasbro into earning its first $1 billion in 2013.
Contrary to expectations, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is attracting the attention of everybody irrespective of age or gender. Last September the appeal was described as a mix of quality information and feel-good vibes. Hasbro’s recent products suggest that it is deliberately courting adult fans with trending cars, comic books and USB drives.
